How the Network Bandwidth Calculator Works
- Each application has a typical speed per user, in megabits per second (Mbps). The rate sits beside each application above.
- Minimum required = each rate × the number of users you enter, added up across every application you select.
- Peak usage = the minimum plus 15%, for busy moments when many people use the network at once.
- Recommended speed = the minimum plus 30%, so there is room to grow. Results are rounded up to the next whole Mbps.
- Status compares your current speed with those numbers. Optimal means you meet the recommended speed. Consider Upgrade means you meet the minimum but not the recommended speed. Upgrade Recommended means you are below the minimum.
- The calculator measures speed only. It does not test the quality or reliability of your connection, or compare what providers charge. The rates are typical figures, not readings from your own network.
- Your analysis replaces these assumptions with your sites, your real usage and quoted internet options.
Common Questions About Network Bandwidth
It is a planning estimate. It multiplies a typical speed for each application by the number of users you enter, then adds a buffer for busy periods. Real use depends on how your people work, so treat the result as a starting point. In a consultation we check it against your actual circuits, sites and usage.
Change a number and the result updates, so you can test a bigger team, a new application or an extra site. Run it more than once to compare scenarios, and plan for growth with the highest realistic case.
Common signs are applications that crawl or time out, video calls that freeze or drop, and remote staff who struggle to connect. Enter your applications and users to see whether your current speed meets the minimum and the recommended speed. If you are not sure what your current speed is, check your internet invoice or contract. Costs that keep rising with no change in service are a contract question, and a technology assessment is the place to look at them.
The calculator shows a peak figure, 15% above your minimum, and a recommended speed, 30% above it. Those buffers cover your busiest hours, such as clinic opening, a payroll run or an all-staff video call. If your busiest hours run heavier than that, tell us in the consultation.
No. Slow applications and dropped calls can also come from an old router or switch, weak WiFi or a congested line. If your current speed already meets the recommended number, we look at the network equipment and the service itself before suggesting an upgrade.
Usually not. Paying for speed you never use takes money from your budget. The goal is enough speed for your busiest hour and your next stage of growth, and no more. For Metro Community Health Centers we recommended paying $250 a month more for internet, because outages were cutting off health records and blocking telehealth. When the numbers say your current speed is enough, we say so.
Yes. Include telehealth video under Video Conferencing and your phones under VoIP Phones, then enter the staff who use each at your busiest site. We focus on healthcare and nonprofit organizations and work with organizations of every size.
